There was a certain satisfaction coming back to Lukanga as a second-term missionary, a certain sense of reassurance. I felt that at last I was starting to make some small degree of progress. I had three years of experience to draw on now. I had trudged hundreds of miles through the nearby hills and preached dozens of sermons. I had taught thousands of classes in French and had finally learned to speak Swahili. More important, I was getting to know people, and people were getting to know me. Yet the more I grew to know the people, the more deeply I felt the gulf that separated us; and the more I learned, the stronger was my impression that I knew almost nothing at all.
